Transportation to and from Sanjo

There are a number of ways to reach the city of Sanjo. The Sanjo-Tsubame IC (Inter-Change) via the Hokuriku Expressway or by taking a Shinkansen (bullet train) to the Tsubame-Sanjo train station via the Joetsu Shinkansen line. A quick 2 hour Shinkansen ride from Tokyo, or 40mins from the nearest airport in Niigata City.

By Air
There is no airport in Sanjo. The closest airport is located in Niigata City which is just an hour or so away. There are no flights from Tokyo. From Niigata airport, the city of Sanjo is approximately a 40mins drive away, 40mins by the Shinkansen or 90mins via the local trains.

By Train

The Joetsu Shinkansen (bullet train) line runs through Sanjo, with a well placed stop at Tsubame-Sanjo Train Station which is located between the city of Sanjo and Tsubame. With the Shinkansen, Sanjo is only a 2 hour bullet train ride away from Tokyo. There are also numerous JR local train stations in Sanjo if you are coming from within the prefecture.

By Bus
You can get to the city of Sanjo via a highway express bus from Tokyo in approximately 4hrs 40mins. Or one could head into Niigata city via a highway express bus and then take a local bus or train to the city of Sanjo in a hour.

Niigata Kotsu (Japanese only)

By Expressway
The Sanjo-Tsubame IC (Inter-Change) is approximately a 20mins drive south of Niigata city, or 20mins north of Nagaoka on the Hokuriku Expressway. From Tokyo, you can get to the Sanjo-Tsubame IC in approximately 3hrs 30mins if driven non-stop. Though, please make use of the various rest areas when tired.
