In 1944, when Akiko Yosano was visiting the Sanjo native, Matsugoroh Hirokawa (yarn dye-designer), she composed the following tanka poem when she was emotionally moved by the view of the sunset over the Shinano River from the estuary of the Ikarashi River.
"くろ雲と越の大河の中に阿里珊瑚の枝に似たる夕映"
Black clouds and the great river of the Hokuriku region is home. And branches resemble coral in the evevning glow.
"Kurukumoto, Koshino taigano, nakani ari. Sangono edani, nitaru yuubae."
