Mt. Sumon-dake (1537.6m)

Mt. Sumon-dake is an extinct volcano which originally erupted during the Quaternary Period (approximately 1.806 million years ago) and is made mostly of pyroxene andesite. This mountain is part of the Echigo mountain range, and from Sanjo, the slightly concave U-shaped crater can be seen against the sky. Looking south from the summit, Mt. Tanigawa-take, Echigo-sanzan, Mt. Koma-gatake and many other mountains can be seen, and to the east Mt. Bandai-san of Aizu and Mikagura-dake can be seen. And straight ahead from the summit the great plains of Echigo and be seen, along with Sado Island in the background amidst the Sea of Japan.

Snow can linger around the summit late into spring, and for that reason Mt. Sumon-dake has also been known as the "snow desert" and also by backcountry Japanese alpine skiers, "Paradise".
