Welcome to Sanjo, a city where many discoveries awaits

最終更新日:2010年2月2日

Find out more about our city by watching our promotional DVD online.  Divided into five chapters:  “Ayumi”, “Waza”, “Den”, “Midori”, and “Aji”, these videos provide a guided tour on the many aspects of our city.

Ayumi :  A brief introduction of our city.

Waza :  A brief history about monozukuri and information about our industries.

Den :  Traditional events and the city’s unique cultural background.

Midori  : Flowing waters, luscious forests and breathtaking sceneries.

Aji :  Mouthwatering dishes produced locally.

=Chapter 1= - Ayumi-

Sanjo City is renown in Japan for its production of metal-goods.  It is located in the center of Niigata prefecture with rich green forests to the east that extend to the Fukushima prefectural boundary, from where the Ikarashi River begins and then crosses the city limits.  From the north-west, Japan’s longest river, the Shinano River, spreads across the area to provide a rich farm belt for peaches, pears, other fruits, and for the cultivation of rice.  Additionally, the Tsubame-Sanjo Station for the Joetsu Shinkansen and the Sanjo-Tsubame Inter-change for the Hokuriku Expressway are located near each other to create a strategic stop for both industry and traffic.  Sanjo’s location also provides a core city for the central prefectural area.

=Chapter 2= - Waza-

Technique

Sanjo has long been known for its production of tools, kitchen knives and other forgery items.  Traditional techniques passed down from over 400 years ago are used today in the production of various items such as Buddhist altars, outdoor goods, kitchen goods, air conditioning and heating products.

In April 2009, the Echigo-Sanjo Uchihamono, a series of items made by traditional forgery techniques, were designated as one of Japan’s Traditional Crafts.  Designated items include:  kitchen knives, Kiridashi knives, wood planes, wood chisels, hatchets, axes, sickles, gardening shears, pliers, and Wakugi nails.

=Chapter 3= -Den-

Many of Sanjo’s traditional events stems from the city’s roots as a temple town and a castle town.  Representative events such as the Ogre Dance, the Sanjo Festival, and the Otorikoshi are all linked to the city’s major shrines and temples.  Additionally, the Great Kite Battle is also an event with a long established history.

=Chapter 4= -Midori-

Nature
Sanjo’s South-east district of Shitada is the perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors.  From hiking or camping at Awagadake to the highly popular Yagigahana hot spring and Echigo-Nagano hot spring, there is always something to do.  Also, from the Kita-imogawa Rice Terraces, listed as one of the nation’s top 100 rice terraces, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding Awagadake.

=Chapter 5= -Aji-

Surrounded by the lush greenery and fertile soils, Sanjo is the producer of many delicious foods.  The Le Lectier pear is popular throughout Japan and is well known as a product the prefecture.  Additionally, Sanjo is the number one producer of Kuruma-fu, a traditional food item.  Many other mouth-watering food products await those to visit Sanjo.
