Man'yo Wisteria (Man'yo-no-Fuji)

Last Update:2008/4/1

A poem from volume 17 of the Man'yo-shu (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves, Japan's oldest existing collection of poetry) written by Oohara-no-takayasu-no-mahito (aka. Takayasu-no-ookimi) mentions this Japanese wisteria tree.

"妹が家に伊久里の森の藤の花今来む春も常かくし見む"
"Imoga ieni ikurino morino fujino hana. Ima komu harumo tsunekakusi mimu"

During spring, when I see the flowers of the Japanese Wisteria from Iguri, I think of my sister who was married off to a distant place.

Beautiful purple flowers bloom here every year around the beginning of May.
