Mt. Koumyou-zan (879m)

Last Update:2008/4/1

Mt. Koumyou-zan is surrounded by Kamakura-sawa (Kamakura glen/valley) and Toishi-sawa and runoff from this mountain will eventually find itself in either Ootani dam or Kasabori dam. For farmers of the Kanbara plains, Mt. Koumyou-zan was important as a source of whetstones. From this mountain, fine natural silica sand filled whetstones were produced, and at one time it was recognized as the source of Japan's best whetstone. The hiking trail follows part of the path where whetstone materials were carried down. As whetstones were quarried for close to 200 years here, a clearly marked trail is laid. Approximately an hour from the trailhead one can find the occasional statue of Avalokitesvara by the side of the trail. Currently about 10 of the original 33 can be found. There are a number of exposed trails portions, so please take care while hiking this trail.
