Isurugi Shrine

Last Update:2008/4/1

The Isurugi Shrine is also known as the "Avalokitesvara of Yoshinoya" by the locals whom live nearby. The main god of this shrine is Isurugihiko-no-mikoto, whom was originally based at Tenpyoji Temple at Mt. Isurugi in Ishikawa prefecture, but was moved to this location, as a god of medicine to provide inexhaustible amount of wealth, infinite good fortune and the granting of countless wishes.

The wood carvings on the Isurugi Shrine where created during the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate, by the Sanjo master sculptor Yasube'e Sakai (aka Unei Ishikawa). As a request from the Kihara family, the village headman (in feudal Japan) whom is an adherent of Honjoji temple, requested the sculptor Sakai to work on the carvings that decorate the Isurugi Shrine during it's reconstruction process.
