Blacksmithing in Sanjo begain in 1625, when the local governer of Izumosaki, Seibei Ootani wished to help the local farmers whom were suffering from the constant flooding of the Ikarashi River. He did so by inviting blacksmiths from Edo (present day Tokyo) to teach the local farmers the art of blacksmithing traditional Japanese nails as a second job, during times of floods.
From the creation of traditional Japanese nails, Sanjo blacksmiths have spread their skills to new products. The city of Sanjo produces not only edged tools such as kitchen knives to handheld work tools, but also outdoor camping equipment, measuring devices, wood products, heating and refrigerating devices along with traditional Japanese carpentry and blacksmith tools.
