Types of Japanese nail extractors

There are various types of nail extractors and the shape and way of using it can differ according to each tool. Though the end process is all the same, to extract nails.

Shoulder Kajiya (Dan Kajiya)

  • A single solid length of steel is shaped into an "L".
  • Top end is thinned to be shaped like a chisel, and a fissure is created.
  • Small indentation is crreated so the nail head can be properly gripped

Flat crowbar (Hira ba-ru)

  • This crow bar is usually slightly flat, or hexaganol.
  • Both ends of the steel bar are processed, and the head piece is used like the Dan-Kajiya.
  • The tail end is flat, so when laid flat, it might fit into the small gap between the target materials.

Enma Nail Extractor

  • Pinch the head of the nail and extract.
  • Once the nail head is grabbed, one can use one of the handles as a crowbar to extract the nail.
  • Long ago, the head of the Enma nail extrator was quenched, but now, the whole tool is quenched.

How to use

How to operate a Kajiya

Firstly, follow fig. 1, insert the cleft(B) between the head of the nail and the wood board to create a small gap..

Next, as fig. 2 shows, use the cleft(A) on the other end and remove nail by following the principle of leverage.

If the nail head is not easily inserted in to the cleft of the kajiya tool, lightly hammer the (C) or (D) end with a gennoh.

How to operate an Enma nail extractor

Grab the head of the nail with the mouth edge, and push over to one side. Use the principle of leverage to remove the nail.

To avoid damaging the surface of the wood, place a small piece of wood or wedge, underneath the nail extractor as a protector and extra leverage.

The thicker the wedge (piece of wood) placed underneath the nail extractor, the easier it will be to remove the target nail due to more efficient leverage. To avoid bending the nail, twisting the nail while pulling can assist with the nail removal.
