Honjoji Temple, Head Temple of the Hokke Sect

Main Hall

 Built by Nichiin Shonin in 1297, Shonin a direct disciple of the founder of this sect, was the first superior of this temple.
 There are seven magnificent Buddhist facilities in the precinct of roughly 6000 tsubo (approx. 19 850 square meters); the main hall, reception hall, bell tower, pagoda, Building of a thousand Buddhas, Banshindo and the temple gates.

Sankien (Honjoji Garden)

 This beautiful garden was restored using traditional gardening techniques.

Wooden Cow Statue at Honjoji

 Nichiin Shonin led this cow as he propagated the doctrines of the Lotus Sutra.

Entrance Fee: Free (Treasure house: 300yen)
Parking: 50 vehicles
Access: Train:  15min walk from Sanjo station on the JR Shinetsu-line.
Vehicle:  15min drive from the Sanjo-Tsubame Inter-Change (Hokuriku Expressway)
