Brief summary of Commerce in Sanjo
Summary
Through the ages, the City of Sanjo as been a regular market town, as a town by the mouth of the Shinano river and also recognized as the Buddhist town of the Chuetsu region. The image of Sanjo is viewed as an "industrial city" by many, due to the foundation the past "Merchants of Sanjo" developed over time. Long ago,the merchants of Sanjo traveled across Japan selling iron/metal goods, developing new products according to peoples needs. Even to this day, this region of central Niigata prefecture is a developing commercial area.
In Sanjo the five shopping districts of Chuo shopping promenade, Ichinokido shopping promenade, Shoei Street shopping promenade, Yokkamachi shopping promenade, and the Higashi-Sanji shopping promenade are all results from the development of past commercial areas. However, due to the development of large scale box shops and outlet stores and also the increase of private automobiles, consumers have been moving out towards the outskirts of the city to buy their goods.
Therefore, there is a need to develop new city plans to meet the needs and the development of all small-medium businesses along with large businesses, while increasing the support for attractive recreation and community awareness.
Commercial Area
The commercial area in the center of the prefecture consists of 14 cities, towns and villages. The population within this commercial area is approximately 290,000 people.
