Sanjo Blacksmith Dojo

Purpose

It is said that the industry of Sanjo began with the manufacturing of traditional Japanese nails a few hundred years ago.

Currently the region is recognized as a metalgoods manufacturing area, but the original tradition of blacksmithing has not lost, and to this day is still an active lifestyle with the city.

This facility has been built to spread the wonders of traditional blacksmithing techniques to all whom visit. In 2002, hands-on blacksmithing classes known as the "Sanjo Blacksmith Dojo" begain and on April 19th, 2005 the "Sanjo Blacksmith Dojo" opened its doors to the public.

Furture "Sanjo Blacksmith Dojo" classes will include blacksmithing, carpentry, family Buddhist alter making and many other fascinating Sanjo skills.

Permanent Workshops

The Sanjo Blacksmith Dojo offers the following two workshops all year round. (except closed days) If attending as a group, please contact before hand to confirm that enough instructors can be provided to your avail.

* Closed days: Monday (If Monday is falls on a holiday, the following day is closed)

  1. Kitchen knife sharpening workshop
    Instructors will carefully instruct you on the proper procedures of kitchen knife sharpening.

    Dates:   Everyday except when closed.*
    Times:   Anytime between 09:00 - 16:00 (9am-4pm)
    Fee:   FREE for the time being
    Time required:   Approximately 1 hour for 1 blade.
    Other:   Please bring your own kitchen knife to be sharpened.


  2. Traditional Japanese Nail making workshop
    Learn how to make your very own traditional Japanese nail. The nail which kindled the the start of the Sanjo blacksmithing culture.

    Dates:   Everyday except when closed.*
    Times:   Anytime between 09:00 - 15:00 (9am-3pm)
    Fee:   Adults 500yen, Under 15 (inclusive) 250yen
    Time required:   Approximately, 1.5 hours to 2 hours.
    Other:   If attending a workshop in a group larger than 5 people, please contact the office beforehand.
